Would I lie to you? - Kitoru Mitsuragi, kitsune beguiler

There was once a village of people who lived near a great forest. One day flaming basketball shaped meteors fell from the heavens and obliterated everything around them, forcing the people to flee deep into the woods. The forest was protected by magical charms set by the guardian of the forest, a fox spirit by the name of Iko. As the world fell apart around them, the villagers adapted to their new lives in the forest. The more they interacted with the forest spirits, the more they began to see the more whimsical sides of life, despite the apocalyptic conditions beyond the forest's edge. After generations, these villagers become more and more spirit like, and less human. From them came the Kitsune, a race of magical fox people.

Most kitsune trend towards chaotic neutrality; they like to mess with other creatures but they don't mean to cause any actual harm or suffering. That being said there are exceptions, and malevolent kitsune are not unheard of. Regardless of their intentions, tricking and setting elaborate pranks are some of kitsune's favorite activities. They are known to use their mystical abilities to deceive and otherwise befuddle their unwary targets, often luring them into the woods and leading them around for hours until they get lost.

Physical Description

Kitsune have 3 forms, a fox form, hybrid form, and humanoid form.

Kitsune Symbol.jpg

Their chosen humanoid form is indistinguishable from others of the same type, which allows them to easily blend in and/or lure unsuspecting victims in for pranks. Most kitsune choose to have beautiful humanoid forms, often elven in appearance, but not always. Despite this, most kitsune are seen in their hybrid form, which they are usually more comfortable in. It resembles their humanoid form but with more obvious fox features, such as ears and tails (which they often are quite proud of). Their fox form is often a simple fox, but with multiple tails (depending on how old they are). Regardless of the form, most kitsune carry a signature fox mask with them, either on their person or worn. This mask they are born with, and it grows with them; it is an extension of their very soul.

Most arboreal races have distaste for kitsune because their constant pranks are often more annoying then entertaining. Forest Elves in particular despise kitsune, both for their longevity and incessant interruptions. Many humans glamorize and even revere kitsune, but they are often shunned by society as a whole. Gnomes were once on quite friendly terms with the kitsune, sharing a mutual love for tricks, illusion magic, and creativity, but that all changed after the death of Garl Glittergold.

While kitsune can be of any alignment, most do not become lawful as they do not enjoy having their personal freedoms limited. The most common alignment among kitsune is chaotic neutral, but the other alignments are not particularly uncommon.

Kitsune Lands

The original great forest where kitsune came from was lost to time, though some long lived kitsune claim to know where it is. That aside, they are more comfortable in more natural environments, and are often quite rare and scattered as a race.

Most kitsune revere the original fox spirit Iko, who took them in during the apocalypse and granted them refuge. Those who do not often follow other nature deities.

Kitsunes Racial Traits:

  • Type (Subtype): Fey
  • Abilities: +2 Charisma, -2 Constitution.
  • Medium Size
  • Speed: A kitsune's base land speed is 40 feet.
  • Special Abilities:
    • Low-Light Vision
    • Trickster (Ex): Kitsune are natural tricksters, and cast illusion spells at +1 caster level.
    • Spell-Like Abilities: Ghost Sound 3/day, Foxfire (faerie fire) 1/day
    • Change Shape (Su): A kitsune’s true form is that of a small fox, but it is most often encountered by mortals in its humanoid form. The kitsune's HP remains the same throughout its different forms. A kitsune remains in one form until it chooses to assume a new one. A change in form cannot be dispelled, nor does a kitsune revert to its natural form when killed. A true seeing spell, however, reveals its natural form if it is in humanoid or hybrid form.
      • Fox Form: In fox form the kitsune is Tiny size. It takes a -4 size penalty to its Strength score, but gains a +4 size bonus to their Dexterity score and has a bite attack appropriate for its size.
      • Humanoid Form: The humanoid form is unique to every kitsune; a kitsune in this form always assumes the same appearance and traits, much as a lycanthrope would.
      • Hybrid Form: In hybrid form a kitsune passes for a Medium size humanoid at first glance, but a Spot check (DC 10) reveals the creature’s fangs, ears, and tails. The kitsune has a bite attack in this form, and can also wield weapons or wear armor.
    • Mask (Ex): Each kitsune is born with a mask, which grows with them as they age. The mask itself is a physical manifestation of the kitsune's soul, similar to a familiar. They need not wear the mask, but if it is ever destroyed or worn by another creature the link is severed and the kitsune gains a negative level (no save). When worn, the mask provides the kitsune with a +2 bonus to saves made against enchantment and illusion effects.
    • Tails (Su): Kitsune age differently than most other mortal creatures. Instead of the usual 4 stages of adult life (adult, middle age, old, venerable), kitsune life stages are measured by how many tails they have. At adulthood, they gain their first tail, and every 100 years later they grow a new tail. Every new tail grants a +2 racial bonus to either Intelligence, Wisdom, Charisma, or Luck. This bonus cannot exceed +6. Kitsune do not suffer aging penalties, nor do they gain any other benefit from aging.
  • Racial Skills: A kitsune character has a +2 racial bonus on Bluff and Listen checks.
  • Automatic Languages: Common, Sylvan.
  • Favored Class: A kitsune's favored class is the beguiler.
  • Level adjustment +1 (+1 per two additional tails).
